Deep black, strong berry tones, a creamy caramel - not least of all, the color of the leather is often decisive in our purchasing decision. We see a bag, a belt or a wallet and the suppleness of the leather, the cool, smooth feel and the intense color of the leather capture our hearts.
But as with any relationship, everyday life creeps in and with it many factors that rob our once coveted leather item of the beauty of the first day. Leather shoes in particular quickly lose their color intensity because they are particularly directly exposed to the weather, dirt and moisture. Small leather goods such as purses or wallets enjoy a more sheltered existence. But even they cannot escape the influences of the outside world in the long term. Sun, water and friction wear out the leather, the leather color fades and soon you feel like you need something new again.
But not so fast! Leather goods are long-lasting products and it is precisely their durability that makes them valuable and sustainable. With the right care, leather products become lifelong companions that even become more beautiful over time and with a certain patina.
EASY TRICKS TO REFRESH YOUR LEATHER COLORS
The first step to preserving the leather's color is, of course, proper handling and waterproofing. Without these, your leather product, and thus its colors, are defenseless against environmental influences. However, it is important to use the correct waterproofing for the type of leather. But even if the color has already faded a little, there are ways to refresh the leather color. Proceed as follows:
1. CLEANING THE LEATHER
The best way to refresh the color of leather goods is to clean the leather thoroughly beforehand. First, use a cloth to remove coarse dirt. Do not clean the leather with a brush, as this will roughen the surface. Then use cleaning foam or cream to remove the last dirt particles from the pores.
Important: Pay attention to the type of leather and follow the recommended cleaning tips for the respective leather type.
2. LEATHER CARE
Once thoroughly cleaned, the clean leather is ready for a good dose of care. You will already notice that the cleaning has made the leather colors shine more brightly again. The cleansed pores of the leather can absorb care products particularly well. Use special color refreshing kits and pamper your leather darling with a suitable balm. Tip: Moisturizing cream for humans can also be used. The grease makes the color shine. Especially black and brown leather products are beautifully refreshed this way, regain their depth, and appear as intense as on the first day.
3. COLORED LEATHER CARE
Depending on the leather and color, you can use colored cleaning products or shoe polish about once or twice a year after cleaning to refresh the leather colors. But be careful: not all types of leather can be treated with colored leather care products. The particularly sensitive aniline leather, for example, should not be completely dyed with leather dyes. Aniline leather is a colloquial term for leather that has been dyed exclusively with soluble dyes and has no coverage from topcoats or pigment coating (finishing).
