Of Punches and Stamps: The Art of Leather Embossing
Leather embossing refers to the pressing of punches or stamps into the leather hide, which leads to a change in the surface. A punch is a steel tool that has an embedded shape on one side. Embossing stamps for personalization are available in the form of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. The font size is predetermined by the embossing set and cannot be varied.
LEATHER EMBOSSING ACCORDING TO CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS: INDIVIDUALITY IN DETAIL
Depending on customer requirements, the individual stamping dies are then manually inserted into the holder of an embossing machine. The steel elements are then heated via a power connection. A leather sample is always selected beforehand, which matches the leather properties of the desired object. Since the visibility of the embossings varies depending on the surface, tests are carried out beforehand. The choice of embossing variant is also relevant in this context.
Foil embossing or blind embossing
If you would like customisation in a colour such as gold or silver, foil stamping is ideal for this. The foil is first placed in the correct stamping position. The foil coating is then transferred to the leather hide by the printing technique of heated stamping dies. If an embossment is made without colour or foil, it is called blind embossing or blind stamping. It should be noted that heavily grained types of leather are somewhat more difficult to emboss.
FOIL STAMPING: SUITABLE LEATHER TYPES AND LIMITATIONS
The condition of the leather surface is crucial in the individualization process. Foil embossing is particularly suitable for smooth leathers. With coarse-grained leather, also known as full-grain leather, it may happen that the foil does not adhere to the grain and the lettering is not clearly visible. Our leather specialists therefore test this in advance and may advise against foil embossing.
HOW CAN I CUSTOMIZE A LEATHER PRODUCT?
Step 1
Select your desired leather product from our product range. Bags are currently not customizable. We do not recommend embossing certain types of leather and models, so it may be that personalization options are not available for your desired product. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact our customer service.
Step 2
On the product page, you can check whether personalization is possible. You will find this information in the form of a clickable button "Personalization". This is set to "No" by default and changes to "Yes" when clicked.
Step 3
You can now add your personalization details directly on the product page. Some fields, such as the embossing position or the embossing color, can be selected from predefined values in a dropdown menu. The embossing text is limited by a certain number of characters.
Step 4
You can find the embossing position by referring to the example image (links in the image overview). The number of possible positions varies depending on the model. Please always check that the desired position is correctly entered.
Step 5
Add the item to your shopping cart. You will see a summary of all your information. As personalized products are excluded from the right of return, please double-check all information. Now complete your purchase.
