Leather Care Products - Proper Care for Your Beloved Leather Items
New leather doesn't need care? Think again. If you want to enjoy your beloved shoes, leather jackets, wallets, and the like for a long time, you can't get around proper care. But: not all leather care products are the same. Even though almost all leathers are uniformly colored and surface-dyed, there are still major differences in their care. The enormous selection of creams, oils, and fats further adds to the confusion. We'll tell you which product is right for your favorite leather goods and what you should consider when buying.
Out of fear of using the wrong care, many people forgo it entirely. However, that's the wrong approach: (Almost) any care product is generally better than none at all. Even if there is virtually no risk of new leather drying out or becoming brittle initially, you should start with leather care in good time. This is because particularly light leathers quickly become dirty, show visible signs of wear, or, in the worst case, even discoloration from clothing, such as dark jeans. To prevent this, there are special care products.
WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER WHEN BUYING LEATHER CARE PRODUCTS?
Generally speaking: not only the quality (and price) of the care product are important criteria, but above all, the type of leather to be treated. Leather can be new or used, matte or glossy, perforated, embossed, or even have decorative stitching. If it is also a particularly valuable type of leather, higher-quality care products should be used accordingly. This is where synthetic oils are used, which do not go rancid and do not provide a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. In addition, additional UV filters prevent the leather from being bleached by the sun. It is advisable to do a "sniff test" when buying leather care: a strong inherent odor is not bothersome for shoes, but can be unpleasant on jackets, bags, or wallets. When in doubt, the effect of care products can always be tested beforehand in a hidden spot. In addition, the care product should always be applied with a light cloth.
